Kinesiotape: ¿Is it Useful?

  • Introduction

Neuromuscular taping, also known as kinesiotape, is a therapeutic technique widely used in the field of physiotherapy and sports. This method uses colored elastic adhesive tapes to apply specific tensions on the skin, depending on the applied tension the main function will vary.

The principal objectives are these:

  1. Pain relief: Kinesio taping can help reduce pain by decreasing pressure on pain receptors. At the same time the gate theory works.

  2. Improved muscle function: By applying the bandage in a certain direction and tension, you can influence the activation and contraction of the muscles. This is due to the release of fascial tension that causes the fascia to move in a certain direction.

  3. Reduction of inflammation: It is one of its strengths, since applied directly on top of it, it can help improve lymphatic circulation and venous return, which helps reduce inflammation and edema in the affected areas.

  4. Joint Stabilization: By applying the bandage properly, support and stability can be provided to the joints. Being elastic, the bandage continues to leave some mobility. Depending on the injury, you can choose this neuromuscular bandage or a hard one, which offers us greater rigidity.

  • Conclusion:

Neuromuscular taping is an effective therapeutic technique that can provide pain relief, improve muscle function, and speed recovery. However, it is important to note that the proper application of the bandage requires knowledge and experience.

It is important to highlight that the neuromuscular bandage is still a complement to the other therapies that are applied in physiotherapy, so this bandage combined with other techniques will always be more effective than by itself.
